Right Dress, Right attitude

I wanted to write posts about fashion, beauty and enjoying them both when you're no longer using your NUS discount card and have a mortgage to pay. I wanted 'Fortynotdead.blogspot.co.uk' but it's taken. By someone who hasn't even had the good courtesy to write on it. Rude.

There are plenty of fashion and beauty blogs out there for women, including women over 40 but they are often by women who seem to work or travel a lot, or who seem to have some mysterious generous benefactor/sponsor/husband. I am not blessed with any of those. I love a bargain, also love luxury, but also have a mortgage and work in an environment where an off the shoulder cheesecloth blouse and pom pom earrings are NSFW.  This is the section of my blog dedicated to fashion and beauty from the perspective of a 40-something with a ridiculously busy job, that involves travel, sleep loss, mayhem and not a generous benefactor or personal stylist in sight (mores the pity).

Right dress, right attitude is a line from the eulogy I gave for my grandmother. My grandmother is who I inherited my love for clothes and beauty from. I told the story of how, during WWII, having been sent to work in a factory and tired of the drudgery and dirt, she decided to shoot for something more glamorous and interesting. The Post Office (c'mon, this is 1940's Nottingham, what did you think I was going to say? Advertising?). Family legend (and my grandfather's memoir) has it that, despite not knowing Hertfordshire from Herefordshire, she bagged the coveted job with HM Royal Mail by donning her best little black dress, and a whole lot of what I believe they call Sass these days. From her I inherited her gorgeous dressing table, a propensity to over-cater and the same belief that the right dress and the right attitude will take you a long way.
